Fortuna lives in a world where goblins, faeries, werewolves, and vampires are very real and many of them live among humans pretending to be mortal. Fortuna and her brother are nightmares, possibly the last surviving members of her species.
At the opening of the book Fortuna is in a cage at the Night Market, kidnapped by goblins and destined to either be sold into slavery or to be dismembered for parts. So it’s established right away that the various supernatural species don’t necessarily get along.
I’m genuinely not sure what to make of this book. The basic premise is really cool – that supernatural beings are descended from fallen angels. Some of the members of the Unseelie Court are revealed to have been among the original rebels – so in other words, demons. That’s a really intriguing concept and you could do some really interesting things with it. But I feel like Sutton never really gets around to exploring it.
I had so many questions at the end of the book – I get that it’s a series, but it still felt like the story was mostly loose threads. Oliver is obviously a real person of some kind, not the figment of her imagination that Fortuna thinks he is. (Also I would bet a large sum of money there is something sketchy about him, I have a hard time believing somebody who hangs out in your dreams for years is entirely trustworthy.)
I am entirely distrustful of Collith. He never answers a question directly and never seems to take direct action, using his position as an excuse. And he never prepares Fortuna for anything. The vision that he shared of the fae living with humanity seems naive at best, entirely fabricated at worst. These people view keeping slaves as their natural right. I don’t think they’re going to be content with a few picnics.
At last Laurie’s true identity is revealed in the last page, but his presence still raises more questions than it resolves. How is he getting in and out? Having a member of a rival court walking around invisible in your home seems like one hell of a security breach.
I think part of my problem might also be about how this was billed as a romance but there doesn’t seem to be any actual romance in it. Of the three men giving Fortuna attention, she certainly finds them all attractive but there doesn’t seem to be any real chemistry with any of them.
I am genuinely torn as to whether or not to try the next book in the hope that some of those lose ends are finally tied up.
