750 pages and I am still not sure about this series.
The main thing that is making me waffle on whether or not I want to finish this series is that it’s just SO repetitive. The cycle of hurt the Vegas-the Vegas fight back-oh no they’re hot-we must hurt the Vegas is just continuous. You would think by now they’d think of another approach since the one they’re using is not working. Oh no, one of our friends has a problem, what do we do! We are distracted by the Vegas so we will attack them again while doing nothing about the actual problem.
At this point I just think all of the characters are too dumb to rule anything.
I’m also starting to find it kind of off-putting how primitive the Fae are. The thing that keeps being repeated is how strength is all that they respect, so even though they had a ruler so brutal they call him The Savage King, a large percentage of the population wants his descendants to stay on the throne. And sure we know Darcy and Tory well enough to decide that they’d be good Queens, but their supporters don’t.
But also that love of brute force informs all their relationships. They can’t even have a disagreement about strategy without having a huge fight and stomping off to sulk for months. It’s so limiting, and it’s frustrating as hell to watch them flail.
But having said what I don’t like – I’m also kind of drawn into the story and want to know what happens next. I’m convinced Clara is fully evil and I want to find out if I’m right. I also think Gabriel is sketchy as hell, the way he just suddenly shows up out of nowhere. I’d bet anything he’s not who he says he is and Orion’s memories are implanted in some way. I also really want to see Lionel Acrux get what he deserves. I have a theory the nymph attacks are being assisted by him.
I’m not a big fan of the “fated mate” thing and the final scene where the stars decide that Darius and Tory are Elysium Mates gave me a big ick. Let them figure their shit out before handing them to each other. I would be OK with it if it happens between Darcy and Orion because they have already chosen each other, but with Darius and Tory there is no way it was going to end well. The idea that the stars decide something so important is bad enough, but then it physically marks you? No, no, no, absolutely not.
I suspect that the series will find a way around that and they’ll couple up anyway. What I would love to see if the two of them moving on and finding other relationships in spite of the curse. A fuck you to the “fated by the stars” bullshit. (I know it won’t happen but I would love it if it did.)
I also really want to see Seth and Caleb decide to be a couple, because that hunt scene was way hotter than anything that happened between either of them and the Vega sisters.
And finally… why the fuck would the Fae celebrate Christmas?
